About BKIF

Building a Financially Resilient India

The BankersKlub India Foundation (BKIF) is committed to a transformative mission: Impacting 1 million underserved women and youth across India within the first five years of its journey.

While India has achieved remarkable success in Bank Account Access (with over 500 million Jan Dhan accounts) and Digital Infrastructure (via UPI and Aadhaar), a significant "last mile" gap remains.

Bank accounts exist in India. Yet, millions remain inactive.

Why This Work Matters

The Gap is Not Access. It’s Usage.

India has achieved remarkable success in financial access through Jan Dhan, UPI, and Aadhaar. Yet, a critical “last mile” gap remains.

What the data says

21%

of Indian women are financially literate, compared with 29% of men.

NCFE Financial Literacy & Inclusion Survey, 2019
49%

of women have no money of their own that they can decide how to use.

NFHS-5, 2019–21 (IWWAGE analysis)
18%

of women's bank accounts are inactive, compared with 11% of men's.

Dormancy Challenge

Millions of women have bank accounts, but a large percentage remain underutilized.

  • Accounts are often used only for DBT withdrawals
  • ATM cards or mobile access is often controlled by family members
  • Limited financial agency

Literacy to Action Gap

Knowing how to use a bank account is not the same as building wealth.

  • Financial products are not designed for irregular incomes
  • Fear of loss prevents participation in financial products, mutual funds, ETFs etc.
  • Limited confidence to move beyond savings accounts

Trust & Voice Deficit

Financial systems are complex and intimidating.

  • Text-heavy apps create barriers
  • Lack of regional language support
  • Absence of trusted financial guidance

Credit Visibility Gap

Access to credit remains limited despite having accounts.

  • No individual transaction history
  • Cash-based economy limits credit scoring
  • Lack of collateral ownership
Our Approach

Bridging the Gap Between Intent, Habit, and Action

Our goal is to move underserved communities from financial exclusion to active participation in India’s capital markets.

Our Pilot: Financial Capability in Rural Haryana

Our first full pilot works with women in villages across Nuh, Palwal, Faridabad and Gurugram districts. Every village starts with a survey, and every training is followed up for weeks afterwards, so we can see what participants actually start doing with what they learned.

Household BudgetingSavings & Goal SettingResponsible BorrowingDigital PaymentsCyber Fraud PreventionGovernment SchemesAiLaxmi

Survey

We begin with a baseline survey in each village to understand how households earn, save, borrow and use banking today.

Community Training

Practical sessions in the village on budgeting, saving, responsible borrowing, digital payments, fraud prevention and government schemes.

Follow-Up

Our team stays in touch with participants in the weeks after training to see what they are using and where they need help.

Support with Mentors

Banker mentors, and AiLaxmi on WhatsApp, keep answering questions so learning turns into lasting habits.
